Upcountry Lions Rugby Club keen to make a comeback

Kandy is badly in need of another rugby club. Today, out of Colombo only Kandy SC are in the game.

The Upcountry Lions Rugby Club was an ‘A’ Division Rugby Team from Nawalapitiya and was launched on January 3, 2012 at Galle Face Hotel.

And they started off with 40 players, which included a number of national, youth and international capped players and the coach was Inthisam Marikar.

The Jayatillake Stadium, with gymnasium facilities and a swimming pool was the home grounds for Upcountry Lions Rugby Club.

The club had national players who had represented the country at the sevens and 15-aside rugby tournaments and talented young junior national players and some outstanding foreign players.

Some of the players who were in the first team were Dimal Jayasinghe, Desmond Wilson, Dunstan de Silva, Sandun Kumara, Dulanga Gunatillake, Malith Hettiarachchi, Uchith Jayasuriya, Sasanka Ariyaratne, Hasitha Perera, Sharo Fernando, Ranga Perera, Rajitha Abeykoon Dilip Selvam, Gayan Ratnage, Sajith Saranga, Mathew Time (Captain), Srinath Sooriyabandara, Dilan Soysa, Asitha Wijesinghe, Nigel Ratwatte, Kanchana Ramanayake, Tevita Taufai, Maga Hettiarachchi, Radhika Hettiarachchi, Migara Wijeratne, Vishwamithra Jayasinghe, Mohammed Sashan, Chanaka Gunaratne, Ashen Gallage and Rajitha Sansoni.

The star-studded side had 13 players who had represented the country and three foreign players to add to their strength.

In May 2014, the club decided to withdraw from the competition and close the club permanently.

So, when will this club come back to the game? Sri Lanka Rugby should give a hand and bring this club back.
