Zhejiang Shuren University (ZJSRU) and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) jointly hosted the ‘Spring Language and Cultural Programme 2024’ for students from USJ, Sri Lanka.

The programme was ceremonially inaugurated on May 27. This event is part of a longstanding memorandum of understanding for friendly exchanges initiated in 2015 by Prof. Rukmal Weerasinghe (USJ) and Prof. Qiubo Huang (ZJSRU).

ZJSRU selected 26 students from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura’s Faculty of Management and Commerce (FMSC) and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS). Thilini Ranasinghe, a faculty member specialising in Chinese language teaching at FHSS, accompanied the students. Prof. Rukmal Weerasinghe, currently on sabbatical at ZJSRU, coordinated the event alongside Miss Liu Jiani, a staff member from ZJSRU’s Office of International Affairs, under the supervision of Miss Wang Yun, the office director. Prof. Janak Kumarasinghe, also on sabbatical at ZJSRU, provided additional support.

Designed and administered by ZJSRU’s International Affairs Office in collaboration with the School of Economics and Social Welfare and other divisions, the programme aimed to address the Chinese language learning needs of Sri Lankan students, foster cultural and economic exchanges, and strengthen institutional friendship in alignment with the Belt and Road Initiative. The programme comprised two main modules.

The first module focused on enhancing Chinese language skills through six lessons. The second module aimed to raise awareness of China’s rich cultural heritage.

Students also participated in on-site activities such as the Grand Canal Cultural Tour, visits to West Lake and Liangzhu Culture and Art Centre, and tours of a tea garden, Hangzhou Urban Development Research Center, and Huawei Global Training Centre. These activities provided a broad cultural and economic perspective of Hangzhou.

Additionally, USJ students had ample opportunities to interact with their Chinese peers, fostering friendships and cultural exchange.

The programme concluded on June 7 with a vibrant closing ceremony attended by Prof. Li Lu, President of ZJSRU, Prof. Pathmalal Manage, Vice Chancellor of USJ, and other dignitaries.

The students expressed their gratitude through heartfelt videos and a final performance of ‘Kulagedarin Dumbara Kanduwatiye’ illustrating a traditional Sri Lankan wedding ceremony.

Prof. Li Lu – President of the ZJSRU and Prof. Pathmalal Manage – Vice Chancellor of the USJ presented certificates to the USJ students, with participation from deans and directors. The concluding remarks from both leaders paved the way for future collaborations between the two universities.

The programme was generously funded by ZJSRU, covering course fees, accommodation, meals, and domestic travel, leaving USJ students responsible only for travel and visa document costs. On behalf of the USJ, the Vice Chancellor extends sincere gratitude to Prof. Li Lu – the President, all the Vice Presidents, Deans, Directors, academics and staff members of the ZJSRU.
