Dankotuwa Police yesterday (18) arrested a van driver who stole a diamond-encrusted wedding ring worth Rs. 4 million and foreign currency worth Rs. 1.4 million from a male doctor who works in Myanmar and had come to Sri Lanka to attend his brother’s funeral.

This doctor is a resident of Sandalankawa. He had come from Myanmar last Monday (11) to attend his brother’s funeral. When he arrived, he hired a van with a driver.

Along with his wedding ring, the doctor kept US dollar and Singapore dollar notes worth Rs.1.4 million in a wallet in the van.

As the driver of the van had gained the trust of the doctor, the doctor kept his wedding ring and wallet containing the money in the van.

The doctor’s daughter had noticed that her father’s wedding ring was missing and inquired about it. Accordingly, when he checked the wallet in the van, he found that his wedding ring, foreign currency and mobile phone were missing.

The doctor made a complaint to the Dankotuwa Police regarding the theft, on Sunday (17). As the driver was a suspect, the Police took him into custody and found the wedding ring and all the stolen money in his possession.
