Vavuniya prisoners contract measles

Authorities on Monday closed the Vavuniya prison until August 15, after detecting several inmates with measles. New inmates directed to the Vavuniya prison, have been transferred to other prisons.

Arrangements have also been made for inmates slated to testify in Court cases, to do so via zoom technology. All the inmates and prison guards have been administered the necessary vaccines and medicines for measles, prison authorities said.

Health authorities in Vavuniya had visited the prison and observed the condition of the patients and directed the prison officials accordingly, as they were of the view that the disease could spread rapidly, due to congestion within the Vavuniya prisons.
