To eradicate drug menace:

State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya yesterday said that arrangements will be made to hand over the vehicles confiscated by Sri Lanka Customs (SLC) to the Sri Lanka Police to strengthen efforts against drug smuggling and trafficking.

The State Minister said so while participating in an inspection visit on Tuesday (20) at the Hambantota Port premises to monitor the vehicles currently parked at the port.

Siyambalapitiya said that some vehicles seized by the Sri Lanka Customs have been idling at the port premises for months.

“On the instructions of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the ministry is looking forward to remove the existing legal obstacles regarding those vehicles and use them for the welfare of the people,” the Minister said.

The State Minister said that the Police Department has a vehicle fleet of 12,000 vehicles though many of these vehicles are older than 20 years.

He added that these vehicles are not enough for 600 police stations and over 100 police stations that were established by the government recently.

IGP Chandana Wickramaratne and Customs officials were present.
