Vehicles imported during ban to be released after surcharge

The vehicles imported to the country after such imports were banned are to be released subject to the payment of Customs duties and a surcharge.

Finance State Minister Dr. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said that measures will be introduced in the future to allow importers of around 100 to 150 motor vehicles imported between May 22, 2020 and November 21, 2021 and which do not have proper documents and a number of other vehicles brought to the country after the vehicle import ban to get their vehicles released from Customs after making the relevant payments.

Recently Parliament approved the introduction of new regulations to allow the release of vehicles brought to the country during the vehicle import ban after making the imposed payments. The revenue target of the Customs this year is Rs.1,265 billion and so far Customs has raked in Rs.783 billion.
