VIAL requests release of vehicles rusting in harbour
Vehicle Importers Association Lanka (VIAL) yesterday highlighted that over 400 various types of vehicles have been in the Colombo Harbour during the last 18 months without being released to importers and requested authorities to make immediate steps to release them.
Speaking to Daily News Business VIAL, Chairman Indika Sampath Merinchchige said even there was a budget proposal that vehicles which are currently idling in the harbour should be handed over to the importers after imposing necessary taxes as these vehicles could be used for various commercial purposes.
He also said even at a time when the Japanese exporters help Sri Lanka vehicle importers to import vehicles without any difficulties it is sad to notice that a large number of vehicles are just idling at the harbour.
He said even though the association repeatedly requested authorities to look into this matter positively and release them from the harbour there was no positive response to this yet.
“So our Association requests authorities even now to take immediate measures to release them from the harbour,” he said.
