Victoria dam, surrounding area to be developed as a tourist attraction
The Victoria dam in Kandy and the surrounding area is to be developed as a major tourist attraction according to a proposal by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Victoria Dam, which is considered to be the tallest dam in the country, was built under the accelerated Mahaweli development project.The dam named after Queen Victoria was opened in 1985 by President JR Jayawardena and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.Under the new development perogramme a statue of Queen Victoria too is to be constructed near the dam.The work of this development project is underway and Lalith U Gamage, Governor of Central Province, visted the area yesterday (04) to inspect its progress.The Governor of Central Province said that further development of this place as a place of attraction for local and foreign tourists will open new income avenues for locals.
