Vidyartha wins Gopallawa Shield
On Saturday Vidyartha College led by Nanjana Wijesuriya were the winners of the William Gopallawa shield rugby game. This was the 52nd rugby encounter between Vidyartha College and Ananda College, which was played at Ananda College Rugby Complex in Rajagiriya. These two schools first scrummed down in1962 in rugby and the shield was presented by William Gopallawa in 1967. Out of the 52 games played Vidyartha College has won 29 games, Ananda College 21 and 2 drawn. Earlier it was a two leg game but today it is played as a one leg encounter.
Vidyartha College scored 48points (4 goals and 4tries) to Ananda College 16 (2 tries and 2 peanlties) . At half time it was 33-6 in favour of the winners. The try scorers for the winners were N. Wijesooriya two and one each from L. Hettiarachchi, Y. Weerasinghe,M. Shakeek, G. Perera, R. Gajanakye and P de Mel and for Andna College Chamuditha Dinesh scored a try and put over two penalties, S. Kuragodage scored one try.
Jaliya to coach Sylvestrians
Jaliya Kumara Weerasinghe who was the coach of St.Sylvester’s College cricket side has come back as coach once again. He led the Sylvestrians in the 2000/2001 season and,was a fine, wicket keeper batsman. He coached this school from 2014 to 2018 and under his coaching they became the Central Province best team. He is sure to give his best and put the cricketers on the correct path .. St. Sylvester’s College cricketers with limited facilities have given their best in cricket over the years,
This coach who hails from Kurunagala has given his best for Sylvestrians as a player and coach. At school he was involved in cricket,hockey and athletics. At cricket he gave his best for the school and played for Kandy district under19-cricket team toured Australia in 2000/01, toured India with the under 19-school cricket team in1998. He also played cricket for Glass House District Cricket Club in Australia 2001/2002.
At Provincial Level represented Central Province under 19 cricket team in 2000/2001, Kandy Cricket Club under 23 Division 1 tournaments in 2000 to 2003. Represented Kandy Cricket Club in premier domestic cricket 2000 to 2006. Played for Kurunegala Sports Club 2008 to 20014.
