Vihas and Jordan to the fore on the final day

Off-spinner Vihas Thewmika finished with fine figures of 6 for 78 while Jordan Johnson stroked a superb knock of 149 in 211 balls with 11 fours and 2 sixes as the last day of the first four-day game between Sri Lanka and West Indies under 19 ended in a draw at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium yesterday.

After rain washed out the third day with Windies facing only 25 overs continued their innings on day 4 as overnight batsman Jordan Johnson remained steady under pressure but fell one run short of completing 150 runs when off-spinner Vihas Thewmika took a return catch to dismiss Johnson in the 84th over.

Steve Wedderburn (41) and Nathan Edward (36) made valuable contributions to help West Indies score a first innings score of 309, replying hosts’ 432 for 8 declared.

Vihas Thewmika took 6 from 28.5 overs while Vishwa Lahiru played a good supporting role to pick 3 for 61.

in Sri Lanka Under 19’s second innings, they were 122 for 4 wickets at the close of play. Skipper Sineth Jayawardena once again failed to impress with the bat as the opener was out for a duck just facing two deliveries while Pulindu Perera scored 13. Ravishan Nethsara finished his innings with a 52-ball fifty with 8 fours. Dinura Kalupahana hit an unbeaten 22 in 22 balls with 3 fours and Sharujan Shanmuganathan scored 26 in 46 balls with 2 fours.

The two teams will play their second and final four-day game from September 12 at the same venue.
