Viren Nettasinghe, Sri Lanka’s promising shuttler gets a chance to play badminton at the 19th Asian Games, will embark on his quest for continental honours in Hangzhou, China from October 2.
Nettasinghe the 20 year old shuttler from St Peters College Bambalapitiya is the only local shuttler to take part at this Asian Games which brings the world’s top stars together at the Binjiang Gymnasium in Hangzhou, will run until October 7
Nettasinghe, currently ranked 83rd in the global badminton singles rankings, comes into the Asian Games fresh from a remarkable silver medal victory in the men’s singles category at the XPORA Indonesia International Challenge, held in Medan, Indonesia earlier this month.
Accompanying Nettasinghe on this important journey is his trusted coach and manager, Roshan Dhammika, and the duo hopes to carry the hopes and aspirations of a nation.
As the competition heats up in Hangzhou, all eyes are on the Sri Lankan Nettasinghe as he strives to showcase his exceptional skills and unwavering determination on the courts of the 19th Asian Games Badminton Championship when he takes on the best of the continent.Sri Lanka Badminton President Rohan de Silva highly appreciated about Nettasinghe’s recent performances while SLB is expected to give more ranking tournaments to young Nettasinghe to improve his ranking to focus on Olympics . So far only two men’s shuttlers, former National champions Niroshan Wijekoon and Niluka Karnaratne got a chance to take part at Olympics while Nettasinghe is expected to take part as the third Sri Lankan at this major event which is scheduled to be held in France next year.
