Sri Lankan promising badminton player Viren Nettasinghe who also the National men’s single runner-up once again came to limelight with winning a bronze medal at the recently concluded Uganda International challenge Badminton championship at Kampala, Uganda.
This BWF tournament was more competitive and important for the local players to improve their world rankings.
Nettasinghe was able to reach the semi finals at the men’s open event while he lost to Indian shuttler Hasrshit Aggarwal in two sets 18-21,19-21 at the semi final. Earlier Nettasinghe beat Elias Bracke of Belgium in a two setter game 21-17, 21-18 while at the quarter finals Nettasinghe defeated Switzerland shuttler Tobias Kuenzi 21-13, 21-14 to qualify for semi-finals.
The men’s open final won by Arnuad Morkle of France defeated Aggarwal in a three setter game 21-15, 18-21, 21-16.
Meanwhile Nettasinghe partnered with Rasindu Hendahewa played men’s double event but they were unable to enter the semi-finals.
However they beat South African pair Jarred Ellieott and Robert Summers 21-17, 21-13 while Sri Lankan pair lost to Algerian pair Koceila Mammeri and Youcef Medel in a hard fought three setter 21-10, 18-21, 13-21 at the quarter finals.
