Viren’s aim is to take part in Olympics

Sri Lankan promising shuttler Viren Nettasinghe is seeded number one of the men’s singles event in the CM Trophy India International Challenge 2023 which will be held from October 31 to November 5 at Raipur Chhattisgarh, India .

Viren created history as first Sri Lanka shuttler to be seeded one at the International Badminton tournament.

The 20 year old former St Peter’s Bambalapitiya player now coached by Tony Wahyudi said this is great honour for me as seeded one player of this tourney.This is mainly due to my achievements at the International tournaments maintaining world rank 80 and my aim is to get Olympic qualification in France 2024.

Today I focus on ongoing Indian International challenge tournament in Bangalore at Prakash Padukone Academy and a chance to come among first ten ranking players and entered the main draw said Viren.

My father Roshan Dhammika Nettasinghe who was a former St Anthony’s Katugastota Ruggerite always behind me acting as Manager and coach at most of my tournaments.He is my strength giving all financial support while Sri Lanka Badminton headed by Rohan de Silva play a supporting role said Nettasinghe.

I started my Badminton from my school and presently former National coach Tony Wahyudi who is Indonesian coach help me lot to develop my skills .I have to play Bahrain tournament and Indian Super Hundred and I have an idea to take part in five more tournaments to improve my world ranking which will help me to enter the Olympics.

Aashinsa Herath the 18 year player from Royal with me at this Indian tournaments and both of us get training by playing each other before the matches and this is vital he said.

Any player s ultimate goal is to go to Olympics and if I get direct qualification it’s a great achievement for a Sri Lankan shuttler.
