Emerging Squad Member Sri Lanka Ladies National player and first ever cricketer to represent Sri Lanka from her school and John Tabet Junior Athlete and colours holder Rajapaksha Mudiyanselage Vishmi Devmini Gunaratne has brought honour and immense glory to both her schoolsAlgama, Medagama Junior School and Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya Gampaha and her motherland with her deeds in the field of sports.
Vishmi was born on 22nd August 2005 and hails from Algama, Medagama and she was admitted to Algama, Medagama Junior School in 2011 when Mr.Upul was at the helm of the school and her first class teacher was Mrs.Priya and her present Principal is Mrs.Hema Jayawardene. Vishmi commenced her athletic career when she was in grade three and her events were 75 and 100 metres and came first and in 2014she participated for the Divisional and Zonal meets and in the Provincial Meet she could not come up to expectations and in the following year she did 75 and 100 metres and Long Jump and swept the board at the Divisional, Zonal and Provincial and became the Champion Athlete in all these three formats and in the next year she received a Certificate for Best Performance at the Provincial Meet and taking part at the Junior Tarbet Meet she received colours for her Best Performances. . In the meantime she passed the Grade Five Scholarship Exam with flying colours and was drafted to Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya Gampaha in2016.
Then in 2017 she took part at the higher meets but could not come up to expectations but in the following year competing in 100, 200 and Long Jump she swept the board and became the Juvenile Champion at the Schools Spots Meet. Same year participating for the 4 x 100 metre relay event her team won the first place at theAll Island Schools Meet and her team repeated the same performances in 2017, 18 and 2019 hundred metre relays and came first and won colours and in 2019 her team broke a twenty year old record and her team mates were Dulhima Shashmi,Dishandi Senaya and Amaya Devli and her Coach was Gayan Munasinghe
Though Vishmi excelled in athletics her forte is Cricket and noticing her talents her Parents Asela Gunaratne and Mrs Dhammika Priyanthi Wijeratne admitted their daughter to Nittambuwa Cricket Academy and came under Chaminda Perera. When she was in grade six she attended practices at her school and came under Chaminda Perera and her first year in the team was in 2017 and played for the under 19 Singer Tournament and for the Big Match with Anula Vidyalaya Nugegoda and in her second year she scored 99 runs against Pelawatte Central and played for the Big Match too and in the following year in the school tournament they came up to semi finals and scored 49 runs versus Anula Vidyalaya and there was no Big Match. Then in 2020 they were the All Island Runners up and in the next year they were the Second Runners up and she passed the 250 run mark.
When she was in grade nine she joined Seenigama Sports Club and played for the Premier Tournament and her Coach was .Mahesh and in the following year there was no tournament due to Corona and in 2021 Seenigama Cricket Club were the Second Runner up and she scored 214 runs against Chilaw Marians and she notched up 112 runs and in the same year she was selected to the Emerging Squad under Mahesh Weerasinghe and for the Sri Lanka National Pool under Hashan Tillakaratne and toured Zimbabwe for the World Qualifying Tournament and her next tour was to Malaysia for the ICC Commonwealth Games Qualifying Tournament and she was awarded Sri Lanka colours and it was a fine exposure for her. Representing Chilaw Marians at the Ladies Division One Cricket Tournament she won the Best Batter Award for her Division One performances.
With these performances under her belt she was appointed as the 2021/22 School Cricket Captain and her deputy is Nethmi Perera and their Team Manager is Asela Gunaratne. So far they have played five matches in the ongoing under 19 cricket tournament and they are unbeaten and has booked a berth in the Quarter Finals.
Her Coaches were Gayan Munasinghe, Asela Sampath and Ishan Rangana and her Private Coach is Anusha Samaranayake. In their last game she scored an unbeaten 417 against Jayanthipura Junior School and perhaps it may be a World Record and she put on 352 runs for the second wicket with Sandali Weerasinghe and she contributed 78 runs and Vishmi has so far scored 688 runs with a Bradsmanque average of 344.0.
In the meantime she joined the Chilaw Marians in 2022 for the Premier Tournament and she notched up an unbeaten 118 runs versus Sri Lanka Army.
