Volkswagen factory to open today
South Asia’s largest car assembly factory, the Volkswagen factory, will be opened today (17) by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, UNP Deputy Leader, President’s Senior Advisor Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.
He was addressing the media in Kuliyapitiya. Kariyawasam further said, “There was a lot of mudslinging towards us because of this factory. Western Automobile will not only open on Tuesday, but will also unveil many vehicles assembled there. At present, 25 vehicles are being assembled in that factory every day.
“There, not only motorcars but also vans, cars, double cabs and vehicles of different brands are assembled. Apart from that, four other types of vehicles are expected to be assembled.
“This factory will create a thousand direct jobs as well as a thousand indirect jobs. At the same time, we are establishing a training school for professionals who want to work in that factory. Those who need it will be given formal training with a certificate to seek foreign jobs through that training.
“Through the establishment of the factory, not only the people of the area in which it is located, but also the people of the country will be able to fulfil their dream of owning a car free from Customs duties. Spare parts for all the vehicles can also be obtained at an affordable price.”
