WB to assist President’s doubling paddy yield goal projects

Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera chaired a discussion held at the Agriculture Ministry seeking the World Bank (WB) assistance for agricultural projects held on Monday (5).

The representatives of the World Bank, Sustainable Development Regional Director Dina Umali-Deininger, Practice Manager Agriculture and Food Gayathri Acharya, Senior Special Economist John Keyzer, Lead Social Development Specialist Anna O’Donnell, Operation Adviser Ipec Alkan, Senior Agricultural Economist Athula Senaratne, Senior Advisor Manoharan and others joined the discussion.

Drone technology, fencing with electric circuits used to prevent crop damage, providing parachute discs, uplifting the dairy industry, etc. were discussed here. There was a discussion about obtaining financial allocations for these areas, especially under World Bank loan assistance.

The Minister said that President Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed the Agriculture Ministry to set up a work order to double the paddy yield in Sri Lanka in the next six cropping seasons and that the necessary new technology for rice cultivation should be provided.

The delegation also said that this work arrangement should be implemented with the aim of making the country self-sufficient in rice as well as paddy export in our country, and that the World Bank is ready to provide the necessary support for that.

The representatives also pointed out that the work order presented by the Agriculture Department should be presented to them immediately.

The Minister also instructed Agriculture Department Director General Malathi Parasuraman to immediately submit the work order prepared by the Agriculture Department to double the paddy yield in the country within six growing seasons.

Ministry Secretary Janaka Dharmakeerthi also participated.
