“We are ready to take any challenge at the International level and the team is confident to play against India, said Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka. “We played five T-20 series against world number one team Australia and now after fours days we are getting ready to play against India in Lucknow today (24) and have to adjust to playing at this conditions, said Shanka at the online media briefing yesterday.”India is back to the series with their seniors and it’s a good challenge for us but we have to be ready at any level. Both two venues Lucknow and Dharamshala first time Sri Lanka will play the T-20 matches but we knew India has more suite for batting wickets and hope to adjust very soon,” said Shanaka. Match will start at 7 pm Sri Lankan time.

The Sri Lankan team is once again concerned about players’ injury issues while two players Kusal Mendis and Maheesh Theekshana are the latest addition to the injury list and both in doubt for the first game today. Skipper Shanaka said MRI scans have been done on two players, Kusal and Maheesh and the participation of both players will be based on the MRI scan results. In addition champion leg spinner Wanidu Hasaranga will miss the first match today as he is not fully recovered from COVID-19 still in Melbourne. Hasaranga is currently awaiting the results of a PCR test in Melbourne,

Hasaranga who tested positive in Australia remains in the country and will not be permitted to leave as he has tested positive in the latest PCR test. Sri Lanka Cricket Medical Committee Chairman Prof. Arjuna de Silva said “This is because the results of the PCR test conducted on Wanindu in Australia were positive. However, Wanindu is still not ruled out from the India T20 series, and hope he will join the team after clearing his PCR report, added Prof Arjuna de Silva.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka further said; we are expected to correct our mistakes during the Australian series. We aim to increase the batting strike rate at power play without losing more wickets if we can do that the middle order can bat without any pressure and that is also important to fewer dot balls during this T-20 innings. We have 15 players in our squad and hope to play the best suitable eleven for today’s game and all players are ready to take the challenge. If we can make a good total at the scoreboard our bowlers can bowl with more confidence and this has to realize by the batters, said skipper Shanaka. We have two spinners Parveen Jayawickrama and Jeffry Vandasay to cover Hasaranga’s place while we hope Hasaranga can join the team very soon. Actually, this is going to be a good opportunity for youngsters like Janith Liyanage and Kamil Mishara to show their talent.

Meanwhile, the India side will be led by Rohit Sharma also have injury issues with their team members. Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Chahar have been ruled out of this series. India media report stated the 31-year-old Sureyakumar has suffered a hairline fracture on his hand and been declared unfit for series. While 29-year-old Chahar recently suffered a hamstring injury and both of them miss this series. The absence of the team’s established players, such as Virat Kholi, Rishabh Pant as well as K.L Rahul will have an impact on the Indian side and will provide more opportunities for the likes of Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Sanju Samson. Kohli not in this Indian team means Shreyas Iyer will get a chance to settle down by playing some useful runs and stake a claim for one of the middle-order slots, though the former India captain will come back to claim his number three spot heading into the World Cup.

The two Teams India and Sri Lanka last played against one another in July last year when India visited Sri Lanka for a three-match ODI and T20I series. India side led by Shikar Dawan with a new-look side last time but India won the ODI series by 2-1 while Sri Lanka arose successfully in the T-20 series with winning 2-1. The overall tally of two countries stands, India won 14, Sri Lanka won 7 with one game ended with a no result. In India two sides played 11 matches while the Sri Lanka team won only two matches, India won 8 and one ended with a no result.
