Western down Southern 29-13 in U-24 Rugby Tourney

Western Province cruised to a convincing 29-13 victory over Southern Province in their SLR Inter-Provincial League Rugby Tournament match played at the Thurstan College Grounds in Colombo yesterday.

Western Province also remained unbeaten in this tournament with their third successive victory as they went on to collect their points from three goals, one try and one penalty after having led 17-7 at half time.

Southern Province, of course put up a fine performance to contain their more fancied opponents but eventually ended up scoring only a solitary goal and two penalties.

The tournament will be continued today, with the Central Province taking on the North Central Province in the last match of the league stage at the Bernard Aluvihare Stadium in Matale.

Earlier, on Saturday the unbeaten Science ‘Maroons’ SC powered their way to a smashing 62-7 victory over the Petersons SC in their match played at the Science College Grounds in Mount Lavinia.

The winners dominated the game from the kick-off and collected their points from six goals and four tries after having led 42-0 at half time. Petersons SC scored a consolation goal in the latter stages of the game.

This was also the third successive victory for Science ‘Maroons’ in this tournament as they went on to secure their place in the Cup Championship final, scheduled for next month.

Meanwhile, the Old Wesleyites Sports Club (OWSC) qualified to play in the Plate Championship final when they trounced the Field Force Sports Club 86-0 at the Thurstan College Grounds.

This was also the second straight win for OWSC, and they finished as number two in the points table with Petersons SC moving to the Bowl Championship.
