Wickramarachchi in joint venture with German brand ZEISS
J.M. Wickramarachchi & Co, one of the leaders in Optometry, Hearing Care & Medical Equipment since 1946 and Carl ZEISS a German Brand with more than 175 years of Optical expertise, came into a joint venture agreement to manufacture spectacle lenses in Sri Lanka.
J.M. Wickramarachchi Chairman Mihira Wickramarachchi said that they have already marked a land for this project and they hope to commence manufacturing early next year on a joint venture basis.
He said that one of the prime objectives of this project is to offer the best international quality spectacles for the general public of Sri Lanka. “Secondly we see that prices of spectacles have gone up and with local manufacturing we will be able to offer a pair of locally made German standard glasses for a very affordable price.”
“Helping to gain the much needed FOREX to Sri Lanka, we are also looking at spectacle lens exports.” He also said they will get technical aspects for this operation from the Zess factory in Bangalore.
Head of Global Sales Operations and Sales, Emerging Markets, Carl ZEISS Vision to Sri Lanka, Boris Dejonckheere, said that they already have factories in Germany, China, US, Brazil, India and several other countries and Sri Lanka would be their latest. Carl ZEISS, is a pioneer in eye care who has evolved to become a leading international giant in the Optical Care Industry today.
“With the COVID pandemic the transport costs have accelerated and we see opening regional factories would bring down the cost of spectacles to the customers.”
Regional Head, SAARC, Carl Zeiss India (Bangalore), Abir Chandra, Vikas Saxena, said that they first hope to bring technical staff from the region and train the local staff in making these spectacles in Sri Lanka. (SS)
