Wijesuriya is a former ruggerite of St. Anthony’s College and led the Nittawela Club to win the Triple Crown in 1997 as an unbeaten team. That was the first time they were unbeaten in all three tournaments.
Wijesuriya’s wide experience and pleasant approach is what drew the players to Nittawela with innovative ideas that encouraged the players to unite and be as a team.
After leaving school he joined CH and FC and was selected to play for the country in the Rugby Asiad, which was held in South Korea.
Wijesuriya gave his best for the Maitland Crescent Club and from there he came back to his home town club Kandy SC, where he was put on the correct track.
Some of his teammates were Imthi Marikar, Dunstan de Silva, Apsi Nagata, Manasa Qoro, Thuru Opethi, Nalin Dissanayake, Duminda Silva, Nalaka Weerakkody and Asoka Jayasena.
After saying goodbye for the game as a player, he started coaching and was in charge of St. Anthony’s and later became a Committee Member of Kandy SC and is now the Vice-President and the Rugby Chairman for many years. Wijesuriya’s two sons Lashan and Krishan played for Trinity College.
