Wijeyadasa announces candidature for President

Justice, Prisons Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe announced his candidature in the upcoming Presidential Election under a coalition formed by several political parties. He stated that his election symbol will be announced on August 1.

Dr. Rajapakshe made this announcement during a special media briefing held yesterday (25) at the Arcade Independence Square in Colombo 7.

He emphasised that running as a candidate in the Presidential Election does not conflict with his ministerial duties. He further highlighted that over 90% of the members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party are joining him in the Presidential Election campaign. Dr. Rajapakshe expressed his belief that political parties and activists who wish to transform the country into one that upholds the rule of law and provides security for both present and future generations will support him. He also mentioned that a few selfish politicians, who have no hope for the country’s progress, will make their own decisions.

Responding to a journalist’s question about whether he is the hope of the people mentioned by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Rajapakshe said he has no understanding of that matter.
