Will resolve coconut oil production issues – Trade Minister
Trade Minister Nalin Fernando stated in Parliament (24) yesterday that the necessary measures will be taken to solve the issues related to coconut oil production within this week.
The Trade Minister said that he had discussed with the importers regarding the problem of rising coconut oil prices in the market.
The Minister said this while replying to an oral question from Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa under Standing Orders 27/2 regarding the large increase in market prices of certain commodities.
Commenting further, the Minister said that there are two methods of importing coconut oil. One is to import fully produced coconut oil to Sri Lanka, or to bring crude coconut oil to Sri Lanka and refine it for sale. But there is something wrong with the policy followed for crude coconut oil.
Only one out of four crude oil refineries are working. The production has totally collapsed. A problem has also arisen in shipping regarding the transportation of fully produced coconut oil, the Minister said.
