Former Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa is facing possible contempt of court proceedings over remarks he made at a political rally in Anuradhapura in September, police said.

Police have decided to initiate legal steps to file a case against Weerawansa before the Court of Appeal over comments allegedly criticizing a Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court order issued on Sept. 4, 2026.

The remarks concerned a court decision to remand the fourth suspect in a case heard before Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court No. 1.

The investigation was launched following written instructions issued by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanka Bodaragama to the Inspector General of Police.

As part of the investigation, police obtained unedited video footage of Weerawansa’s speech from seven television channels.

Statements were also recorded from rally organizers, announcers, journalists, police officers deployed for security, nearby residents and the individual who supplied the sound equipment.

Police subsequently submitted the investigation findings, witness statements and video evidence to the court.

The relevant documents have now been forwarded to the court registrar for further legal action under the Contempt of a Court, Tribunal or Institution Act, No. 8 of 2024.

The move could result in contempt of court proceedings against Weerawansa before the Court of Appeal. (Newswire)
