Lakmal Subasinghe was a champion athlete for his alma mater St.Benedict College-13 in the Inter-School athletics tournaments. He was also the junior national all island 400 metres champion as well as the national record holder. Lakmal was also the Junior Asian 400×4 fifth place at China. Singapore open Athletics championship 400 metres winner. Sri Lanka national open 400 third place. He was also the Sri Lanka national athletics poolist.
At present Lakmal is the athletics coach of St.Peters College – 04.
Speaking exclusively to the Daily News, Lakmal said “From my childhood I was really interested to watch athletic events and had a dream to become a successful athlete one day, that’s the main reason why I entered the world of sport”.
“My mother and father were the shadow behind me who drove me to achieve most of the things in life. All my teachers and athletic coaches gave their fullest support. Presently my wife is doing her best to make my endeavours a success. Hence I’m always grateful to them”.
“When I was 10 years old, I participated in a school running event and I understood that I have talent for athletics and that’s the reason why I chose athletics”.
“Someone needs a lot of energy, dedication, confidence and courage to be an athlete. Without these it’s really hard to be an athlete. Therefore it is worth the effort”.
“My favourite athlete is former Sri Lanka 400 champion Rohan Pradeep and my favourite leisure time activities are traveling and watching cricket matches”.
“My most unforgettable incident that rang a bell in me was winning the gold medal of the 400m running event of the open athletic championships held in Singapore, hence to date I cherish those moments very much”.
“My top priority in life is my family, career and health will come in line”.
“I don’t like to compare myself to anyone else; I like to create my own Identity as I believe everyone has their own talents and abilities”.
“Once one of my students said you are the best athletics coach I have ever met, thus far that’s the best compliment I have received”.
“I am thankful to God for everything that he has blessed me with. I will hand it over to God and do my part which I can control to make my achievements better”.
