A woman was arrested last Friday (15) night by a group of officers of the Police Anti-Narcotics Division of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for smuggling a stock of 17,000 foreign cigarettes worth Rs.1.7 million from Dubai.
The suspect is a 51-year-old resident of Puttalam. This woman appeared to be often bringing goods by air and selling them in Sri Lanka.
The officers of the Police Anti-Narcotics Division arrested her when 85 cartons of cigarettes containing 17,000 cigarettes were found hidden in several of her suitcases containing textiles.
She had arrived at the BIA on an Emirates flight bearing number EK-647 from Dubai.
The suspect and the stock of cigarettes were taken into custody and Police Anti-Narcotics Division is conducting further investigations.
