Woman arrested for smuggling gold worth over Rs. 145 Mn

Customs Officers at the Katunayake Airport arrested a woman who tried to smuggle in 24 carat gold worth over Rs. 145 million in the form of credit and debit cards and gold gel. 

Customs Department investigators said this was the first time they had detected gold in the form of credit and debit cards. These have been arranged in such a way that they appear to be credit and debit cards issued by various commercial banks, Customs Spokesperson Deputy Director of Customs (Legal Affairs) Sudaththa Silva said.

This stock of gold has been illegally brought to Sri Lanka by a 30-year-old woman from Gampaha.She had arrived on a flight from Dubai via India and according to Customs officers she is a frequent traveller.

In her luggage the officers had found 27 credit cards made of 24 carat gold, necklaces, bracelets and rings worth over Rs. 110 million.

In addition to this, a stock of gold gel weighing 2 kg and 200 grams wrapped in black cello tape was also seized by the officers of the Customs Revenue Monitoring Division and their value has been estimated to Rs. 35 Mn. For this arrest, the officials of India’s Revenue Intelligence Division had provided information to the officials of the Revenue Supervision Division of Sri Lanka Customs.The investigation with regard to the detection is continuing.
