Woman drug peddler nabbed with 49 phones

A 53-year-old woman from Kandy, Dangolla area, who trades drugs for valuables including mobile phones stolen by drug addicts, has been arrested by a team of officers from the Kandy Division’s Criminal Investigation Department. The Police have found 49 mobile phones, a water motor and a stock of cosmetics that had been given to this woman by people who stole them to get drugs.

The Police also found 2.5 grams of drugs and Rs.192,000 in her possession.

The Police say that the suspect woman has been arrested by the Police with drugs before and has been in prison.

This woman is reportedly engaged in large-scale drug trafficking again.

A team of Police officers has taken steps to raid the house on the instructions of the Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau OIC Tilak Samaranayake.

After being presented to the Court, an order was obtained to detain the suspect woman for seven days for questioning, Police said.

It has been revealed through Police investigations that the stolen mobile phones cost Rs. 50,000 and she would buy them for about Rs. 2,000 and give the addicts the drugs accordingly.

According to the complaints received at the Police stations around Kandy regarding the theft of mobile phones and other items, the Police have started an investigation regarding the items found in the woman’s possession.
