Sri Lanka Customs imposed a fine of Rs. 118 million on an Indian woman who was recently arrested for attempting to smuggle gold into Sri Lanka, Customs Director Seevali Arukgoda said.
He said that she took steps to pay the fine immediately.
This Indian national was apprehended at the Bandaranaike International Airport last Friday (22) while trying to smuggle 5kg and 500 grams of gold into Sri Lanka worth Rs. 120 million from Dubai by concealing them in her handbag and body.
The formal Customs inspection was carried out and Sri Lanka Customs officers confiscated the gold.
Arukgoda further said that both the fine and the value of the confiscated gold amounted to nearly Rs. 200 million.
