Woman, infant die at childbirth

The Nittambuwa Police said Nimmi Sakunthala, a 22-year-old woman died shortly after giving birth at Wathupitiwala Base Hospital. The victim was a resident of Kaleliya Ratmale Watta area

It has also been revealed that the child she gave birth to has also died before delivery.

The woman was admitted to Wathupitiwala Base Hospital for delivery on the 18th. Hospital sources said that this is the first delivery of the deceased woman and she underwent a caesarean operation.

Relatives said that they have doubts about the death of the woman and the unborn infant and have filed a complaint with the Hospital Police about it.

When inquired about this incident, a senior officer of the Wathupitiwala Base Hospital said that there is a doubt about the death of the woman and infant. The relatives have protested against conducting the post-mortem at the Wathupitiwala Base Hospital and after the Police presented the matter to the Court, the post-mortem will be conducted in a hospital ordered by the Magistrate. Nittambuwa Police are conducting investigations into the incident.
