Woman remanded over alleged infanticide

Tambuttegama Police have arrested a mother suspected of infanticide. The woman is suspected of burying her baby, wrapped in a shopping bag, near the fence of a nearby land immediately after giving birth.

The Police said that the killing of the baby had taken place on December 17.

The body was recovered by the Police and the investigation revealed that the baby had been buried alive.

According to information received by the Police on December 22, this 31-year-old mother of two, a resident of Thekkawatte, was questioned for about two-and-a-half hours during which she disclosed the crime.

The suspect woman’s husband left her two years ago. The baby’s father is said to be a 41-year-old person residing in Galadivulvewa, Nochchchiyagama. His wife has also left him.

The two met near the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi last Poson Poya during a pilgrimage to Anuradhapura. The woman became pregnant after sexual relations with the man.

The Police said that she gave birth to the baby at home on December 17.

This infanticide was revealed following information from a vigilante villager.

Both the woman and the man were arrested on suspicion of this murder and the Police took steps to recover the body of the infant.

The man has been granted bail after both were produced before the Tambuttegama Magistrate’s Court.

Police reported to the Court that the man had been living in Nochchiyagama when this crime had been committed by the woman.

The woman has been remanded and she is currently receiving treatment at Tambuttegama Hospital under the supervision of prison officials.
