Eight suspects involved in the killing of a youth on the Hanguranketha – Kottawala Road following an argument

over a land dispute, surrendered to the Kandy Police Station yesterday. They were later arrested by the police.

A father and a son were injured and admitted to the Kandy General hospital following the attack on June 19. The son,Thangavelu Santhush, 22 who was seriously injured died on Sunday. He was planning to leave for Japan for employment.

A house of a person involved in this assault was also set on fire by some group on the night of the June 19. However fire was doused with the intervention of the police.

It is said that the people involved in this attack are from the same village and they fled from the village while they were searched by the police. After the death of the youth, the police had arrested a suspect in connection with the murder.She is a resident of Udayattakumbure in Hanguranketha.She is a chef and is 47 years old. She was remanded after being produced in court.

A former member of a Local Government was among the suspects who fled and hid.A group of around 200 people gathered near the Haguranketha Police Station demanding the arrest of the suspects involved in the murder and staged a protest. The police said that there was a drunken group among them. Those people also threw stones at the police station. The police said that they even tried to enter the police premises by breaking open the gate which was closed.

The police officers have also fired in the air to control the rioting crowd based on the safety of the court production , weaponry and officers in the police station . Two officers fired 38 shots with two T-56 guns

The police say that there was no loss of life or property in this shooting. Frightened by the shooting, the rioters left the police station and stayed on the Rikilagaskadawala- Kandy road and dispersed after holding a protest.

The police say that the gate of the police station has been damaged. The residents who were engaged in the protest, accused that almost a week has passed since the attack, but the police did not arrest the suspects.

The funeral of the victim will be held today (28). It is planned to deploy special security in the area at the time of the last rites.

Central Province Senior DIG Lalith Pathinayake said that a separate investigation is currently underway regarding the group who attacked the police station and the Kandy Division Criminal Investigation Bureau has also started an investigation into the killing of the young man.
