Woman returning from Court shot inside bus, gunman identified
Two persons who came on a motorcycle stopped a bus travelling from Ambalanthota to Koggalla and shot a woman who was inside the bus yesterday (7) evening.
Ambalanthota Police said a 48-year-old mother of three named Lasantha Rohini, a resident of Ambalantota, Koggalla, was injured in the shooting.
While the bus was travelling from Ambalanthota to Koggalla with passengers, a motorcycle coming from behind had stopped the bus in Ambalanthota Madayamalalanda area and the pillion rider had boarded the bus and shot the woman seated inside and fled.
The woman was shot in the right shoulder area and after being admitted to the Baragama regional hospital, she was admitted to the Hambantota General Hospital for further treatment.
The woman who was shot is the mother of one of the main suspects in a murder that took place in the South Kadwara area of Ambalanthota about one and a half months ago. The woman was returning home after attending Court hearings.The woman’s 17-year-old daughter and the woman’s sister were on the bus when the shooting took place.
Police said that they have identified the shooters. DIG Mahesh Senaratne said that the son-in-law of the person killed on July 18 has been identified as one of the suspects.
Police had made an arrest within a few hours regarding the murder that took place on July 18. The person killed was Amarakoon Kankanamge Siripala (62), a father of two. Investigations revealed that the shooters did not come to kill this man, but to kill his son-in-law.
