Woman SSP petitions SC for not appointing her as Acting DIG
Woman Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bimshani Jasinghe has filed a petition in Supreme Court for removing her post as an acting DIG.
In her petition shesaid that she had gone abroad while working as the Acting DIG of the Community Police Unit and when she returned subsequent to fulfilling her duties at the United Nations Organization (UNO), authorities had taken action to remove her from the post of Acting DIG and that as a result her fundamental rights had been violated.
She is currently the most senior woman SSP in service. The petition seeks an order to reinstate her as Acting DIG. The petitioner has said that she, who is currently the most senior female Superintendent of Police in this country, was appointed Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Community Police Unit from December 14, 2020.
It is stated in the petition that she went abroad on June 15, 2023 to join the United Nations Organization for one year while working in that position. The petitioner stated further that she was not allowed to take over the duties of the Acting Deputy Inspector General when she returned to Sri Lanka after completing her service abroad. It is mentioned in the petition that when the authorities were asked about this, they mentioned that the petitioner does not have such a position.
The petitioner alleges that it is an unfair, unjust and an arbitrary decision not to give her the opportunity to serve in her previous post as acting DIG.
