Woman who defrauded Rs. 5.25 Mn arrested

A woman who defrauded Rupees fifty two lakhs fifty thousand (Rs.5,25,0000) by claiming to provide employment in Dubai was arrested yesterday by the Foreign Employment Bureau’s Special Investigation Division while working in a foreign employment agency in Maradana.

The girl has now been placed in the custody of her grandmother and referred to the Horana Base Hospital for treatment.The rope used to beat the girl has also been taken into police custody.

The suspect was arrested based on information received by the Anguruwathota Police Station

Inspector Ananda Silva that the woman in the house was constantly harassing a little girl in a house in Neboda, Newtal Watte area. The Police noted that when the OIC, Officer-In-Charge of the Children and Women Bureau Sub-Inspector Vishaka Dharmapala and other officers had gone to the house, the girl was crying and lying naked on the floor inside the house and the suspect was holding the girl’s hand.

A police officer said that several marks were seen on the girl’s left hand that indicated that the suspect had assaulted her. When the suspect was interrogated, she said the girl doesn’t listen, she is stubborn. That is why she was beaten.

The police investigation revealed that the girl’s father took the girl and came to live in the house of the suspect due to the fact that the girl’s mother went with another man about a year ago, leaving the girl and her father alone. The police further said that the father had not been at home when the girl was harassed by the suspect. The police have also recorded statements from the neighbours regarding the brutality of the suspect.

The 20-year-old suspect is to be produced before the Horana Magistrate’s Court, and the police said that the court will be requested to place the girl in suitable custody.

A team of police officers including Inspector Vishakha Dharmapala, Officer-In-Charge of the Children and Women’s Bureau are conducting investigations, under the guidance of Officer-In- Charge of the Anguruwathota Police Station, Inspector Ananda Silva.
