Woman with 221 gemstones held at BIA

Criminal Investigation Department Officers arrested a Chinese woman who tried to leave Sri Lanka with 221 gemstones worth over Rs.12.5 million on Monday (8) at Bandaranaike International Airport. The suspect, 32, was then handed over to the Airport Customs officers for further investigations.

Since the suspect could neither speak Sinhala nor English, investigations were conducted with the assistance of a translator.

Two local businessmen were also called to the BIA according to the information revealed from the questioning of the suspect.

Airport Customs are holding the suspect under custody and conducting further investigations.
