State Defence Minister Premitha Bandara Tennakoon told Parliament yesterday that women officers will be given an opportunity to reach the top level positions of the Tri Forces in the future.
“A woman can only earn the rank of Major, especially in the Army at the moment.
Accordingly, the Ordinance of the Women Corps of the Tri Forces will be updated in this regard and the relevant draft has been prepared and forwarded to the Attorney General’s Department.
He said this while joining the Budget debate on the expenditure head of the Ministry of Women, Child Affairs and Social Empowerment. The State Minister said that women should always get equal status and this will start with the three Armed Forces. The Minister also mentioned that the opportunity will be given to women sailors in the Navy for the first time in history.
