Women’s Empowerment Bill passed, National Commission on Women soon

The Women’s Empowerment Bill was passed in Parliament with amendments yesterday. The debate on the Second Reading of this Bill, which was presented to Parliament on May 7, 2024, took up on June 4 and the debate continued yesterday for the second day.

This new Act advocates for the establishment of a National Commission on Women, equipped to safeguard women’s rights and pursue justice for any violations. Furthermore, a specialized commission will address instances of violence against women, providing prompt remedies as needed. This new Act has provided provisions for the preparation and implementation of Sri Lanka’s national policy on the advancement and empowerment of women.

The Bill was submitted to the Parliament as a result of a joint effort by the the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus, the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Children, Women and Gender and the Ministry of Women’s Child Affairs and Social Empowerment.

Meanwhile, a vote was held in Parliament yesterday regarding the amendments brought to the Second Reading of the Women’s Empowerment Bill. It is related to the amendment brought by MP Gevindu Kumaratunga to the Bill. Accordingly, the amendments brought by MP Gevindu Kumaratunga received five votes in favour and 14 votes against.Then the Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapaksa informed Parliament that the amendment brought by the MP Gevindu Kumaratunga was rejected by a majority of nine votes.Three abstained from voting.
