World Maritime Day today
World Maritime Day will be celebrated today (29) at The Monarch Imperial Thalawathugoda from 6 p.m. onwards.
This event was organised by Capt. Nish Wijayakulathilaka, the IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador and the Vice-President (Global) of the Nautical Institute (UK) The World Maritime Day held to increase awareness on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security, and the marine environment. The theme for this year’s event is “New technologies for greener shipping”.
Among the highlights of the event will be a panel discussion and a Video speech of Secretary-General, International Maritime Organization (IMO), Kitack Lim while the IMO Senior Consultant/ CEO Laugfs Maritime Dr. Leslie Hemachandra, will make the keynote address.
Country Manager, DNV Sri Lanka Saman Kumarasinghe will speak on the ‘Innovative practices to drive new technologies and alternative fuels for greener shipping’ while Capt. Peshala Medagama will talk on Challenges of Sri Lanka`s seafarer Training.
The subject of Maritime policies toward a sustainable blue economy of Sri Lanka will be covered by Commodore Ravi Tissera while Prof Bandunee Atapattu will speak on ‘Global warming and greenhouse effect’.
Introduction to IMO SCAT will be done by Capt. Nish Wijayakulathilaka.
Maritime security and challenges topic would be covered by Rear Admiral Kanchana Banagoda while Darshana Chandrasekera of Colombo Dockyard will speak on
Sri Lankan Ship Building and challenges for greener shipping’.
The final topic of the event would be on ‘Shipping Crimes and criminal liability’ and it would be presented by Dr. Dan M. Gunasekara.
