Yohan Waduge–SLPP, stresses on electorate’s, locations’ ‘individuality’ and its specific needs
Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Kalutara District Organiser, Yohan Waduge, stressed on his long-standing commitment to the Party, having been a founding member since 2018. He first ran for the Kalutara Municipal Council in the 2018 Provincial Council Elections and is now contesting the Parliamentary Election for the first time.
Waduge argued against comparing Presidential and General Election results, noting the distinct nature of each outcome. He pointed out that Kalutara’s 8 constituencies face unique local issues; for instance, the challenges in Mathugama are different from those in Beruwala or, Horana. He stressed the importance of tailored solutions to address these specific concerns rather than a uniform approach.
He praised the SLPP for its infrastructure development initiatives in villages, including roads and pathways, under the “village upliftment, country upliftment, road upliftment” programmes. However, he noted that significant development in Kalutara stalled in 2015, after President Maithripala Sirisena’s election, which split the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), and disrupted progress made under Mahinda Rajapaksa’s administration.
Reflecting on the recent Presidential Election, Waduge stated that the SLPP lost support due to a lack of strong Candidates, highlighting the detrimental last-minute withdrawal of Dhammika Perera and the hurried nomination of Namal Rajapaksa, which he attributed to poor leadership decisions. He further pointed out that Party senior leader Basil Rajapaksa had left the country ahead of the election.
Additionally, he observed that certain MPs’ actions had alienated supporters, leading to diminished votes for the SLPP. Some members of the Party failed to vote, and disillusionment caused many to cast protest votes against the NPP.
Finally, Waduge invited former supporters of the United National Party and the SLFP, who are currently unaffiliated, to join him in the SLPP, promising to provide leadership for the Kalutara District.
