Yupun to develop athletics with SLC’s donation
Sri Lanka sprinter Yupun Abeykoon the South Asian fastest athlete entered into an agreement with the Ministry of Sports and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to develop athletics in the country. Abeykoon the 27 year old sprinter based in Italy returned home home for a one month holiday and trained young athletes at the Sugathadsa Stadium and also met Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, National Sports Council Chairman Arjuna Ranatunga and Sri Lanka Athletic President Major General Palitha Fernando.
The Sports Ministry together with Sri Lanka Cricket has also handed over US Dollars 100,000 to Yupun Abeykoon to develop athletics at the request of the Sports Minister said Secretary to the Sports Ministry Dr Amal Harsha de Silva. Earlier Sports Minister met him in Italy and discussed about Sri Lanka athletic development and Yupun pointed out the requirements of local athletes.
When Yupun returned home the Minister once again reqested for the services of Yupun and the Commonwealth Games bronze medalist promised to give his service for betterment of Sri Lanka Athletics. The agreement is very successul and we hope to work out on it very soon said Sports Ministry Secretary Dr Amal Harsha de Silva.
The donation has been handed over to Yupun Abeykoon, who claimed the title of “South Asia’s and Sri Lanka’s fastest man” in May, on the advice of Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe.
Yupun Abeykoon has gone back to Italy and has resumed his training to focus on next Asian Games.
