An application with the Geo-Goviya information system prepared by the Agrarian Development Department was launched on Wednesday (18) at the Agrarian Development Department Auditorium.

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, State Ministers D. B. Herath and Mohan de Silva as well as Ministry Secretary Gunadasa Samarasinghe, Agricultural Development Department Commissioner General H. M. A. L. Abeyratne were present.

The Agriculture Ministry, Agricultural Development Department, Arthur C. Clarke Centre and the International Water Management Institute have jointly developed the Geo-Goviya information system. Representatives from those institutions also participated.

This new application includes all the information about Sri Lanka’s land use, paddy land quantity, number of farmers, land cultivated in one season and available yield, emergency agricultural information, educational information to make farmers aware of agriculture etc. in this new system.

The Government has implemented this application under the programme of digitization of public institutions to provide better and faster services to the public.

In particular, in the second phase of this application, steps have been taken to upgrade this application so that it is possible to predict the harvest that can be obtained not only at the respective provincial and district level but also at the village official division level.

The Arthur C. Clarke Center is going to provide the necessary support for that by using Geo-Space Technology. Currently, 1.91 million paddy lands in Sri Lanka have been included in this system and 1.8 million farmers have been registered.

The Minister said that the lack of essential and accurate data related to the agricultural sector in this country has become a serious problem in the implementation of development programmes. None of the related institutions have any accurate data related to the paddy land cultivated in one season as well as the yield obtained.

Therefore, the Minister also mentioned that this new application will be very useful in future agricultural development activities as it consists of a scientifically researched and entered data system.

Also, the Minister instructed the officials to prepare a work order to provide new knowledge about agriculture to the farmers. The scientific knowledge possessed by the agricultural sector in this country has not yet reached the farmers. Therefore, the Minister emphasized the need for such a programme.
