Experienced all-rounder Angelo Mathews and right arm paceman Dushmantha Chameera are set to join the World Cup squad in India as traveling reserves.
According to a senior official of the SLC both Matthews and Chameera are expected to join the Sri Lanka team either today ( 19) or tomorrow and these two players can only be considered for selection if any of the current players in the squad get injured and can be replaced with approval from the ICC technical committee
Meanwhile Matheesha Pathirana the young paceman who has a shoulder injury did not take part in the training session and he is likely to go out of the team after considering his injury. He had a training session on Wednesday but did not take part at the training yesterday and Daily News learnt that he is not fit enough to bowl during the training.
Opener Kusal Janith Perera who scored fighting knock of 76 at the last Australia game is not fully fit after being hit on the helmet when he batted. His fitness is being observed by the physiotherapist and team doctor while Dasun Shanaka also not back to normal and named as travelling reserve and Chamika Karunaratne replaced him and played his first game against Australia.
Meanwhile according to a SLC official both new replacements Angelo Mathews and Dushmantha Chameera have to get Sports Ministry approval prior to included in the World Cup squad if Matheesha Pathirana and Kusal Janith Perera couldn’t get greenlight from medical reports. Both Matthews and Chameera could join the original squad but technical committee approval has to be obtained. Earlier team management had an idea to name Promod Madushan as travel reserve but now it was changed and Matthews and Chameera were added to the team .
Sri Lanka team will play against Netherlands as a day game on October 21 at Lucknow while with the injury issues Sri Lanka team has not been finalised yet.
