Several Southern Province schools closed since Sunday

The Southern Province education authorities state that several schools have been closed due to heavy rains in the province since Sunday.

Several schools in Akuressa, Deniyaya, Mulatiyana and Walasmulla areas have been closed.

Also all schools in the Morawaka Educational Division have also been closed. Southern Province Education Secretary Ranjith Yapa said zonal education directors have been empowered to decide on closing the schools due to adverse weather.

Meanwhile, it is reported that the Matara–Kotapala road has been blocked from Kirilipana due to an earth slip, hampering through traffic.

The Morawaka–Neluwa Road is also blocked from Morawaka town and Pitabaddara is flooded due to the Kirama Oya overflowing.

Meanwhile the Meteorology Department said showers or thundershowers will occur today in most provinces of the island after 1.00 pm.

Showers may occur in the coastal areas of the Western and Southern Provinces during the morning too.

Fairly heavy showers about 75mm are likely at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and North Central Provinces.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces during the morning.
